The banded knifefish (Gymnotus carapo) is a South American freshwater species and the most widespread member of its genus. It lives in the Amazon, Orinoco, and Río de la Plata basins, plus rivers in the Guianas, northeastern Brazil’s northern coast (like the Parnaíba), northern Argentina down to the 36th parallel south, and Trinidad. People often mix it up with relatives, including the Central American G. maculosus, and the common name “banded knifefish” sometimes refers to the whole genus Gymnotus rather than just this species.
This fish occupies nearly any freshwater habitat within its range—rivers and streams (slow or fast), floodplains, estuaries, swamps, and lakes—but not deep river channels. It can handle low-oxygen water by breathing air with a modified swim bladder, survives in polluted areas, and can live on land for a while if its home dries up.
Adults reach up to 76 cm (30 in) total length, but rarely exceed 42 cm (17 in); depending on the population, average size is 15–26 cm (6–10 in). In one study, two breeding males measured 18 cm (7 in) and 33.5 cm (13 in). The body is brown with an oblique banded pattern that varies individually and by region. There are also regional differences in body shape, but a review found these insufficient to split the species, though it recommended recognizing seven subspecies: G. c. carapo (French Guiana and Suriname), G. c. australis (Río de la Plata basin), G. c. caatingaensis (Parnaíba basin), G. c. madeirensis (upper Madeira basin), G. c. occidentalis (western Amazon, Rio Negro, and Essequibo basins), G. c. orientalis (eastern Amazon), and G. c. septentrionalis (Orinoco basin and Trinidad).
Like all knifefish, it is electric: it generates weak charges and senses disturbances in its electric field to navigate, find prey, and communicate. It is highly territorial and reacts aggressively to the electric field of another G. carapo, but cannot produce a strong shock like the electric eel. Nocturnal, it eats bottom-dwelling worms, insects, crustaceans, small fish, and plant material. Males mouth-brood the young and build and guard a nest—a depression in the bottom where the female lays eggs.
